Since childhood, I’ve been fascinated by fashion—intrigued by how certain brands leave a lasting impact and how styles remain relevant across generations. Growing up, I viewed clothes as purely practical, a way to stay warm, without considering them as a means of self-expression. But as I grew older, I began to notice how certain pieces resonated with me—choices that felt like they expressed something about who I was.
This realization, I believe, is universal: the clothes we wear often speak volumes about our identity. Fashion, in this way, becomes another powerful form of expression.
This idea was the spark for The Gaping Beast—a brand designed to empower people to create clothing that feels uniquely their own. The concept began as a simple doodle, a Beast I would draw everywhere, almost like a personal watermark to leave my mark. Over time, this simple Beast evolved into countless iterations as I refined it, and these designs eventually became the foundation for The Gaping Beast. Every T-shirt you see today is derived from the Original Beast that I created so many years ago.
At the same time, I couldn’t ignore the environmental impact of fashion, which accounts for around 10% of global emissions. Much of this stems from the short-lived nature of clothing. People are often drawn to a particular design, fit, or trend, but these elements quickly lose their appeal. A fresh design may feel outdated within months, fast fashion quality leads to rapid wear and tear, and trends inevitably fade. As a result, so many garments end up forgotten in the back of a drawer.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. By rethinking these factors, we can transform how we approach clothing—focusing on letting people design their own lasting pieces, prioritizing quality to slow down wear, and moving beyond fleeting trends.
